Half-Day and Full Day Guided Kayak Tours
Sea kayaking is a great way to explore the outdoors; you are close to small and large wildlife and you experience the beauty and grandness of the coastline from a fascinating different angle.
Sea kayaking is for everybody; young and old, beginner and more experienced paddler. We use locally-made sea kayaks known for comfort and stability. You can paddle on your own or help each other by taking a tandem sea kayak; we can even place a seat in the centre hatch for the smaller children.
Don't forget your camera! Enjoy the beauty and wildness of the Salish Sea from your kayak and glide along amazing rock formations, trees and wildlife. Sea stars, crabs and anemones can be seen underneath your boat; seals and eagles are nearby. Have a break on a beach and explore the rich biodiversity of the tidal zone.
Tap into your adventurous spirit and book a remarkable sea kayak experience with us for half a day, a full day or multi-days and let yourself be surprised.
We offer half-day (3 or 4 hr) and full day (7 hr) kayak tours in Nanaimo from April to September. The kayak tours are also suitable for beginners with limited or no experience. We strongly recommend a tandem (double) kayak both for stability and ease of paddling (double power). For the little paddlers we have a child seat suited for the double kayak.

- Röming Saysutshun / Newcastle Island: 4 hr kayak tour. This tour shows everything Nanaimo has to offer on the water. We paddle through Departure Bay (same as the 3 hr tour) and around Saysutshun with a break at a beautiful bay. Stunning views, beautiful shoreline and a good paddle. Less suitable for the youngest paddlers (< 6 yr) unless they want to sit still for a while.
- Röming Departure Bay: 3 hr kayak tour. This tour shows the highlights of Saysutshun's and Departure Bay's beauty and history. We paddle around small islands with a variety of wildlife including harbour seals. Suitable for young families and people who don't need to go far to have a good time.
- Röming Pirate's Cove: 7 hr kayak tour. This tour shows the beauty of the northern Gulf Islands. We launch south of Nanaimo and make a crossing to some stunning Gulf Islands with beautiful eroded shorelines. We paddle around Decourcy Island and have a long break at Pirate's Cove. Suitable for the slightly older paddler (> 15 yr) who likes to go places.
Röming Saysutshun / Newcastle Island (4hr)Duration: 4 hr with 3 hr of actual paddling. No experience needed.
Saysutshun (formerly known as Newcastle Island) is named by the Snuneymuxw First Nation people and has a long and vibrant history. We paddle around the island and enjoy the dramatic sandstone shoreline with its honeycomb erosion patterns (Tafoni). Wildlife can be seen under water and above the water; sea stars, crabs, seals and Bald Eagles are commonly spotted during our tours. The island is riddled with Arbutus and Garry Oak trees; a unique ecosystem distinct to the east coast of Vancouver Island. A sandstone quarry and remnants of coal mining can be seen from your kayak. During our paddle we have beautiful views on the Salish Sea, Gabriola Island and the Coastal Mountains in the background.

Röming Departure Bay (3 hr)
Duration: 3 hr with 2 hr of actual paddling. No experience needed.
This shorter tour shows the highlights of Departure Bay. We paddle along the northwest side of Saysutshun, the gem of Nanaimo, and around the Brandon Islands and Jesse Island. We almost always encounter Harbour Seals and smaller wildlife, like birds including sea stars and anemones at a lower tide. This tour is a more sheltered than the 4 hr tour and ideal for young families and people who like the paddle experience for a shorter distance.

Röming Pirate's Cove (7 hr)Duration: 7 hr with 5.5 hrs of actual paddling. Some kayak experience preferred.
Located between Gabriola en Valdez Island is De Courcy Island; this Gulf Island is well known for its natural beauty. We paddle along sandstone formations carved by wind and water into magical shapes and the honeycomb erosion patterns called Tafoni. We begin our tour in Cedar-by-the-Sea, south of Nanaimo, sneak through the 'hole in the wall' if the tide is right and have a break on the scenic beach of Pirate's Cove Marine Park. This cove on De Courcy Island is also known for the colourful character of Brother XII who created here the Aquarian Foundation in 1927, a self-sufficient cult independent of the outside world. Most of his followers were well-off people, like widows and former business men and they were 'chosen to save mankind'; giving Brother XII their savings and complete control of their lives. Plenty of wildlife can be seen under and above the water; seals and Bald Eagles are regularly spotted including sea-stars, crabs and anemones at low tide. This scenic tour is always an experience!
