This tour shows the beauty of the northern Gulf Islands. We launch south of Nanaimo and make a crossing to some stunning Gulf Islands with beautiful eroded shorelines. We paddle around Decourcy Island and have a long break at Pirate's Cove. Suitable for the slightly older paddler (recommended > 15 yr) who likes to go places.
Located between Gabriola en Valdez Island is De Courcy Island; this Gulf Island is well known for its natural beauty. We paddle along sandstone formations carved by wind and water into magical shapes and the honeycomb erosion patterns called Tafoni. We begin our tour in Cedar-by-the-Sea, south of Nanaimo, sneak through the 'hole in the wall' if the tide is right and have a break on the scenic beach of Pirate's Cove Marine Park. This cove on De Courcy Island is also known for the colourful character of Brother XII who created here the Aquarian Foundation in 1927, a self-sufficient cult independent of the outside world. Plenty of wildlife can be seen under and above the water; seals and Bald Eagles are regularly spotted including sea-stars, crabs and anemones at low tide. This scenic tour is always an experience!

"Richard was an amazing and experienced guide. His tour is easily the highlight of my entire honeymoon trip! He is one of the only guides we found that does full 7 hour day trips and it was so worth it. He makes you feel safe and is very knowledgeable about the local wildlife and nature. His tours would be great for any families with younger children or people who don't have much kayaking experience. Throughout the whole trip he was telling us about different animals, and plants that we were seeing. Halfway through at lunch, we got to tour a small island where he told us the history of the island and took us out into the shallows to hold starfish. He even surprised us by bringing a small bottle of wine to celebrate our honeymoon at lunch. He took photo of us the entire time and sent them to us later. He is an amazing ocean kayaking guide. Definitely book him for a great kayaking experience!" Elizabeth, Google Review, August 2025
"We did the 7-hr kayak trip to Pirate Cove. It was a great day on the water exploring the area and experiencing the natural wonders, the unique ecosystem and geological formations in the Nanaimo region. Richard was a wonderful guide, he has so much knowledge of the history of this area, and is an excellent storyteller. We saw a lot of wildlife, including seals, cormorants, raccoons, river otter, bald eagles, starfish, crabs, and so much more. I would highly recommend this tour!" Alexis, Google Review, July 2025
"What a fantastic day we had! We took the day trip to Pirate's Cove. Richard is the perfect guide. Besides a fantastic kayak trip, we also received a lot of information about the flora and fauna, the area, and of course, the necessary tips for improving our paddling. Even though we have no kayaking experience, this day trip was amazing and very doable. We highly recommend it. Richard, thank you for a wonderful experience!"
