Enjoy the beauty and wildness of the Salish Sea from your kayak and glide along amazing rock formations, trees and wildlife. Sea stars, crabs and anemones can be seen underneath your boat; seals and eagles are nearby.
This shorter tour shows the highlights of Departure Bay. We paddle along the northwest side of Saysutshun, the gem of Nanaimo, and around the Brandon Islands and Jesse Island. We almost always encounter Harbour Seals and smaller wildlife, like birds including sea stars and anemones at a lower tide. This tour is a more sheltered than the 4 hr tour and ideal for young families and people who like the paddle experience for a shorter distance.

"We booked with Richard for a 3-hour kayaking tour for a big group for our work team retreat and it was excellent! His safety briefing is great and his equipment is all high end. He knows a lot about the local area and showed us some amazing wildlife - otters, seals, starfish, various birds etc. He’s super friendly and easy to work with. Highly recommend if you’re looking to kayak but prefer to have someone there to show you around vs padding aimlessly in the ocean. The tour is thoughtfully planned to cater to all. Our 7 and 9 year olds enjoyed the experience of getting close to nature (sea star, jellyfish, anemone, harbour seals), and we appreciated Richard's local knowledge to help us appreciate the hidden history and beautiful nature of Nanaimo. We have done lake and river kayaking before, but sea kayaking (not to mention crossing a seaplane runway and BC Ferries path) was a new experience and we would not have been confident to do it without Richard expertly guiding us and cheering us on.
